Why You Should Meditate and 7 Easy Tips to Do It [+ video]

If you’re anything like me, you often find your mind racing a million miles a minute. New ideas are constantly going through your head, you may feel like you’re constantly daydreaming, and it may keep you from falling asleep easily. Having all of these thoughts isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but there are times when we get fixated on certain thoughts or situations and we begin to feel like we lose control. I hate when this happens - it’s like I wish I could just throw all of my thoughts out on a table, organize them, throw away what I don’t need, and focus on the rest.

But, that’s not our reality. Fortunately, there is an option to feel more in control of your thoughts, to make things slow down, and become more mindful and aware in each moment - and that’s through meditation.

What is meditation?

Meditation is a way of training your mind to reach enlightenment, or self-realization. Meditation allows you to essentially slow down your world, and choose how you want to react to it.

Why Should I meditate?

To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. Lao Tzu

To me, meditating makes me feel like I’m recharged. To name a few other reasons why you may want to meditate:

  • Calm your mind
  • Lower stress
  • Control your fight or flight reflexes
  • Reduce your blood pressure
  • Have a better sleep
  • Improve health (especially nervous system)

And there are more, but I just wanted to name a few. If any of these reasons to meditate sound appealing, I’d like you to try it out. Just set aside a couple of minutes and you’re well on your way to getting started! I've also picked 7 resources to help make your journey into meditating a bit easier and less frightening. Here are some apps, videos, a book, and podcast to get you started.

Book: Russell Simmons - Success Through Stillness

From the very first page, I fell in love with this book. Success Through Stillness is an easy read, and Russell breaks down meditation on a level that anyone can understand. This book is so good that I feel like I've been meditating, just from reading it. Purchase here.

App: Russell Simmons - Meditation Made Easy

Okay, if you can't tell yet, I love Russell Simmons. And one day we will do yoga and meditate together. I'm speaking it to the universe now, so mark my words, it's gonna happen! Anyway, this app is just what it says, "meditation made easy". Russell talks about meditation, goes over chants, and before you realize it, you're meditating. Also, this app is free!

Podcast: The Sound Sessions by Lauren Ash

If you're familiar with Black Girl in Om, then you know of the founder and creative director, Lauren Ash. Lauren has started a podcast of mindful meditations with soulful sounds, for people of color. Lauren's voice is smooth and soothing, and will have you relaxed and meditating in no time. Listen here.

App: Headspace

Now, I actually haven't used this app yet, but I always, and I mean always hear great things about it. From my research, Headspace offers guided meditations and mindfulness techniques to make meditating easy. You can set daily goals, track your progress, and it syncs with your Apple Watch! Download here.

App: Meditation Studio

One night I just could not fall asleep. Counting sheep, staying still, covering my eyes, nothing would work! I opened up my Meditation Studio app and opened their collection of sleep meditations. I listened to their intro to sleep, and then beach relaxation, and it was a wrap! This app truly taught me to appreciate mindfulness, because for those 6 minutes, I was laying out on the beach, getting ready to go to sleep, when in reality I was in the bed. This app is not free, it's $2.99, but comes with tons of collections from being healthy: stress, sleep, anxiety, pain, to being awesome: happiness, performance, compassion, and many more! This app is worth the investment. It's only 1/4 of a meal at Chipotle! Download here.
